Not even Minori is as close to Taiga as Ryūji. But Ryūji is the only person who is close to fulfilling that role at the moment. Whether or not it’s just friendship or something more is up in the air right now. There’s no question in my mind that Taiga both needs and wants something in her life, badly. Juxtaposing this scene with the one prior is really meaningful to me. Taiga is so incensed by Ami’s presence that she doesn’t even notice the stalker until later and she wants to fight it out with Ami to settle her own grievances (p.142). The chapter ends with Ami being pursued by a stalker and, meeting up with Ryūji and Taiga in front of their homes, pleading with them to help her. Intentionally or not, Ryūji clearly doesn’t see her as an equal and he doesn’t trust her. Instead of continuing out of her shell Taiga reverts back to her old haughty self (p.140) and the bickering continues. Nevertheless, his reaction was hurtful and Taiga's retort is well deserved, “You sister-in-law.” Ryūji had an opportunity to let her grow up a little but he basically smacked her down and the result is predictable. I don't think it's on purpose per se or that it's meant to be hurtful so much as he's comfortable with their situation and has no desires or even thoughts towards letting their relationship grow. I think this is another example of how Ryūji somewhat takes Taiga for granted at this point. Taiga offered to do something kind, something she normally wouldn’t do (for anyone) and Ryūji just shoots her down. Ryūji is surprise by the offer which is understandable but, then he unnecessarily corrects her rather simplistic and incomplete description of the salad preparation process (p.138). What happens next has always made me mad. Instead of walking haughtily out in front of Ryūji, she turns around and walks with Ryūji, she makes casual conversation about making dinner, and then offers to make a salad. While returning from the market, Taiga seems to have taken leave of her senses (in this case I think it's what most would call maturity). This scene took me a few times to understand in the anime but Taiga explains on page 134 exactly what was going on, “And so now the truth is out-you’re a camouflaged chubster! You eat too much!”Īfter school Taiga goes home alone but, at her request, after Ryūji leaves school he comes to get her to go to the market.
